Developing Website Pages for Smartphones

Smartphone limitations The Smartphone does not have all the features of a desktop PC – however with some ingenuity it can provide important information to the user. The Smartphone has two major limitations – the width of the screen (about 320 pixels to 640 for the iPhone 5) and the lack of a keyboard. The designer needs to work around these limitations. Input Limitations As to the character input limitations – the numbers 0 through 9 and A through Z can be entered via command buttons or a dropdown. Screen Size The height of the screen is not a problem, as the user can scroll down. The screen width limitation is not as limiting as it first seems. The font size which is acceptable on a PC needs to be reduced for viewing on a Smartphone. Hence more information can fit across the screen. The user also has the option to pan and zoom – but this should be kept to a minimum. Meta tags and CSS The HTML Meta tag “viewport” (introduced by Apple, but supported by...

The Methods and Techniques Used For Security Testing

Security testing can be performed in many ways like, oBlack Box Level oWhite Box Level oDatabase Level Black Box Level oSession Hijacking Session Hijacking commonly called as “IP Spoofing” where a user session will be attacked on a protected network. oSession Prediction Session Prediction is a method of obtaining data or a session ID of an authorized user and gets access to the application. In a web application the session ID can be retrieved from cookies or URL. The Session Prediction happening can be predicted when a website is not responding normally or stops responding for an unknown reason. oEmail Spoofing Email Spoofing is duplicating the email header (“From” address) to look like originated from actual source and if the email is replied it will land in the spammers inbox. By inserting commands in the header the message information can be altered. It is possible to send a spoofed email with information you didn’t write. oContent Spoofing Content spoof...

Microsoft Great Plains Technical Support : Typical Questions and Answers

Technical support offered by MBS depends on the region. For North America (NA), support is available to both partners and customers who availed of the support plan. In Asia Pacific (AP), Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) though, support is only available to partners. Unfortunately, not every customer in North America can avail of support from their vendor. Some who opted not to renew their annual enhancement plans are orphaned from their vendors and do not receive free upgrades. If they need immediate support, they can contact the MBS Support Team directly but they are charged a higher premium. In this case, it is best to get support from partners such as Alba Spectrum Technologies or the like instead of directly from MBS. Below are some questions and answers that the MBS Support Team (Asia and EMEA) receive: Q1. Will Microsoft Great Plains run on operating systems other than Microsoft Windows? A1. Microsoft Great Plains was first developed to support both Microsoft and Mac operat...

Transaction Processing in Database Management Systems

Transaction processing within the parlance of data base management systems is when SQL statements that are required to be executed on the database are grouped into units of transactions. This ensures that a single transaction executes a whole unit or does not execute at all. Let us for example take a banking transaction during which X transfers some money to Y. There should be a debit of X’s account and a corresponding credit into Y’s account. Imagine if there is a fatality during the transaction where the transaction which increases the bank balance of Y cannot be completed due to a disk crash or due to a power failure etc., in such a case the system will cease to be consistent as it has completed a transaction namely a debit, but did not complete the corresponding credit transaction due to a power failure or a hard disk crash. Let us also consider the alternative where both these database operations are bundled into a transaction, so either both execute together or both do...

Conversion of Access Database Systems to Visual Basic Dot NET and SQL Server

Microsoft Access is showing its age. Most of the techniques (File Server, VBA, DAO, Jet Database Engine, etc) hark back 20 or more years. Microsoft will continue supporting VBA for many years to come, but the programming emphasis is rapidly changing in favour of Visual Basic.Net and SQL Server. For company administration systems, the combination of a VB.Net FrontEnd with an SQL Server BackEnd database is the ideal. Visual Basic is business rules oriented and SQL Server is efficient and easy to maintain. VB.Net Upgrade Conversion Reasons The reasons for an upgrade from Microsoft Access to Visual Basic.Net and an SQL Server database are: A strategic corporate decision A worry about the future of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) The difficulty and cost in supporting obsolete and error ridden code The difficulty and cost in supporting code written by amateurs without regard to standards The need to replace an inefficient administration system that just “grew like Topsy” The n...

Accessing Data in MySQL Database Using PHP

PHP and MySQL are two components that are almost always present in every web-based program. Data-driven Web applications can use the MySQL which has the main advantages of open source applications. In each database in MySQL there are a few tables. To learn how to access the data contained in the MySQL database, create a database instance with the name “online-store” . Databases can be created using the SQL command “create database online-store” or using PHPMyadmin . Later in the database table named instance make an “employee” table with the columns in it is the “id”, “first-name”, “last-name”, “address” . You can create table “employee” using SQL command as follows: CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `employee` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `first-name` varchar(50) NOT NULL, `last-name` varchar(50) NOT NULL, `address` varchar(200) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHAR...

The Key Features of Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Microsoft SQL training is important to learn all about the different versions of this program. And, once the class is taken it is important for technicians to continue their education when new versions of SQL are available. For example, SQL 2005 training is necessary for techs to understand all the ins and outs of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005. It is worthwhile to take SQL 2005 training classes because it keeps you up to date and improves your income. When you take a class of this nature you will learn about some of the key features of Microsoft SQL 2005. T SQL, also known as Transact-SQL is a variant of SQL and is used in the Microsoft SQL Server. This additional syntax helps in stored procedures. TDS, Tabular Data Stream, is what both Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase/ASE use to communicate. This was also incorporated into the FreeTDS project so that more Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase databases could communicate. The most recent version is SQL Server 2005. This supports the connectiv...

Oracle SQL Certification: 1Z0-051 or 1Z0-061?

The first of the Oracle 12c certification exams to go into production is 1Z0-061: Oracle Database 12c: SQL Fundamentals. Oracle University put this exam into production almost simultaneously with the retirement of the much older exam 1Z0-007: Introduction to Oracle9i SQL. However, the 11g version of the SQL Fundamentals exam, 1Z0-051, is still available. Having two equivalent exams in production leads to a fair amount of confusion among certification candidates. In this article I will discuss the two exams, what is different between them, and how to choose one over the other. Either will satisfy the SQL requirement for the “Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate” or “Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate” tracks. The SQL requirement can also be satisfied by passing 1Z0-047: Oracle Database SQL Expert. However, 1Z0-047 is a considerably harder exam than either 1Z0-051 or 1Z0-061. This is an option that should only be considered if you have wo...

Crystal Reports - Microsoft SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server is the leader for inexpensive and middle size SQL solutions. Plus it is now capable to serve large enterprise on Microsoft Windows platform. Crystal Reports is the most flexible tool on the market and it has market recognition. Multiple software vendors offer Crystal Reports as the main reporting tool: Microsoft, Best Software, Oracle to name a few. Sometimes developers try to use Crystal directly to pull data from multiple database platforms – we understand the need to give you additional tips to increase Crystal report flexibility. Also common case when Crystal report should pull data from multiple database platforms. Assuming that you are creating Crystal Reports on Windows platform – we recommend you to use Microsoft SQL Server as a database access tool. 1. Use Crystal when you have your query tuned – regardless how good Crystal Reports is – it is reporting tool – not querying environment. Tune your query first and be sure tha...

Securing Your Insurance Agency Website From Cyber Attack

Cyberattacks are on the rise, so it’s no surprise that cyber insurance continues to be one of the fastest growing areas in the insurance industry. For insurance agencies, there are two sides to this coin, opportunity for cyber insurance related growth, and the potential for a malicious cyberattack against their own agency website. How can you make your insurance agency website more secure and limit your exposure to a cyberattack or breach? The Basics Install SSL. This is a mandatory step for all websites! Update your software frequently. This includes your operating environment, coding, theme, plugins, etc. Use complex passwords. All passwords for all user access to your website should be complex. It’s often best to use the computer-generated passwords provided by your system. Educate your users. Take the time to ensure all employees and contractors understand cyber security best practices including preventing phishing emails and other hacking emails. Use anti-malware so...

Introduction to Database Driven Development, PHP and MySQL

PHP is one of the “scripting languages” of the Web. It is an interpreted language, interpreted by the official PHP interpreter, developed specifically for web programming. Being quite similar to ASP in many ways, chances are a change from ASP to PHP would not be all that difficult for a seasoned developer who was experienced in a C-style language. PHP, combined with Apache, or another web server handles all the “standard” web serving side of development; it watches for requests, it hands them off to the appropriate handlers, it sends the required headers, and it finalizes the job. On it’s own, PHP is a language capable of many simple things: date functions, file manipulation, mathematics, logic, all the traditional programming language stuff (including some very feature-filled mechanics for topics such as string manipulation and date manipulation) – but it doesn’t expand in to the power given by database driven web applications. Luckily, there a...

Website Security and Your Business Health

Any business today would consider it foolhardy not to use an antivirus program on their office machines. Practically all businesses would also have some built-in redundancy for their data storage just in case there is a hard drive crash or other catastrophic failure caused by fire or flooding. But what most business owners don’t realize is that their websites are just as open to attacks by online hackers and viruses as their local machines. And especially if your websites are hosted on a “virtual server” meaning that multiple sites are hosted using the same hardware. Virtual services are attractive because of their low pricing but this form of hosting also leaves the other websites hosted on that server vulnerable to one bad apple. For example, in May of 2007, over 90,000 websites were hijacked by cybercriminals to illegally install malicious software on visitor’s computers when they clicked on the Google search results. A research conducted by StopBadware found ...

Studying for 1Z0-497: Oracle Database 12c: Essentials

Passing the Oracle Database 12c: Essentials exam (1Z0-497) will earn exam candidates the Oracle Database 12c Certified Implementation Specialist certification. It will also make them an OPN Certified Specialist in Oracle 12c if they are employed by a company that is part of the Oracle Partner Network (OPN). Partner companies with employees who are certified as OPN specialists gain a higher level of specialization in the OPN program. As such, this credential makes you a more attractive employee to companies that are part of the Oracle Partner Network. The 1Z0-497 exam is a standalone test and is not part of any track. To earn the related certification requires only passing the exam. There is no required training or other pre-requisites. The 12c database will be Oracle’s flagship product for several years to come and this exam will be a popular one for some time. This exam covers many of the same topics as the 12c database administrator track but does not require the same depth of...

All About Microsoft Access 2013 and Access 365

Microsoft Access 2013 is the software that has progressed over the ages from Access 1.1 in 1992 until now. Office Professional 2013 Software (which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access) will allow you to install and run Access 2013 as usual. The Office 365 version is paid by monthly subscription and provides Web services to Office 2013. It includes the Office Professional 2013 software as well as Access 365 and Access 2013. Access 365, besides the name “Access”, has little to nothing in common with Access 2013 or previous versions of Access. What is Access 365 all about? Access 365 is a tool for creating web apps that run within SharePoint 2013. The old .ACCDB format has been abandoned. New applications should use the Access 365 model, or stick with Access 2010. Access 365 allows the rapid creation of small applications using the standard web technologies of HTML5, CSS and JavaScript in a simplified web development environment. One big feature is that Access ...

Oracle Exam 1Z0-147 Is Being Retired: What Does That Mean to Me?

Oracle Certification announced the retirement of several exams on March 13, including 1Z0-147: Program with PL/SQL . This exam satisfies the PL/SQL component to become a Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate. Originally developed while Oracle 9i was the current database release, there has been speculation for some time that this exam would be retired. As of the announcement, the exam will no longer be available after July 31, 2013. Oracle professionals that are pursuing the PL/SQL development path have been asking what effect this retirement will have on the process of getting the PL/SQL OCA certification. The impact of the announcement and what actions you should take depend on what stage of the PL/SQL certification process you are in. If you have passed 1Z0-147 — For people who have already passed the test, the exam retirement means nothing at all. Oracle certifications and exam results do not change when an exam is retired. The only people affected by the retirement are ...

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Web

Databases and Licensing. Databases are the backbone of even basic Internet applications these days. Generally hidden away as the final layer in all software architecture, the database is the heart of any web application that needs to store and access information. Microsoft’s SQL Server is one of the top of the line databases that can be used for Enterprise or web related applications. It’s fast , powerful, and has excellent integration with all Microsoft products. Unfortunately, it’s adoption as a database for small web applications has been restricted till now due to a tiny stumbling block known as Licensing. For normal SQL databases, Microsoft imposes a fee for each entity connected with the database. This was called a Client Access License (CAL) and could be processor based, user based, or device based. Essentially, it means that, if you purchased a user based CAL, you would have to pay a fee for each user accessing the database and for device based CAL’s, a l...
